You’ve Been Boo’d : Starting a Fun New Halloween Tradition

There are so many fun ways to celebrate Halloween, but one of our favorites is also one of the simplest… Boo’ing your neighbors!

If you’re not familiar with the tradition, here’s how it works: You put together a small bag of Halloween treats or surprises, secretly leave it on a friend or neighbor’s doorstep with a “You’ve Been Boo’d” note + instructions, ring the doorbell, and make your getaway before you’re spotted.

The recipient hangs a “We’ve Been Boo’d” sign on their door or window so other neighbors know they’ve already been Boo’d, then keeps the fun going by surprising someone else.

It’s part Halloween game, part random act of kindness, and a really easy way to spread a little extra joy around your neighborhood during spooky season.

What You Need to Boo Your Neighbors

Ready to spread the Halloween spirit? Here’s what you’ll need to get started:

  • A bag, basket, or container

  • A few Halloween treats or small surprises

  • A “You’ve Been Boo’d” note, sign, or tag with instructions

  • A “We’ve Been Boo’d” sign for the recipient to display

You can make your own signs or download our free You’ve Been Boo’d printable here. It includes two “You’ve Been Boo’d” pennants (you can attach them to wooden dowels or craft sticks, string them on ribbon, or use them as-is), two “We’ve Been Boo’d!” ghosts for your recipients to display + two instruction cards. Just print, color + cut out the pieces, then you’re ready to Boo!

What to Put in a Boo Bag

This does not need to turn into an elaborate gift basket. A few small treats are plenty!

Some easy ideas:

  • Halloween candy or treats

  • Popcorn or another favorite snack

  • Glow sticks

  • Halloween stickers or temporary tattoos

  • Pencils, erasers, or other little Halloween goodies

  • A small craft or activity

  • Play-Doh or a mini sensory activity

  • Halloween socks

  • A small seasonal toy

  • A handwritten note, Halloween joke, or silly riddle

And Boo’ing definitely isn’t just for kids! Surprise a grown-up friend or neighbor with a favorite snack, coffee gift card, candle, bottle of wine, or another little treat you know they’ll enjoy.

TRHH TIP: Use what you have and keep it simple. This is supposed to be a fun surprise and a small act of kindness, not another holiday project that requires a cart full of stuff!

How to Boo Someone

Once you have your treats ready, the rest is easy:

  1. Choose who you want to Boo. Pick a friend or neighbor who hasn’t already been Boo’d.

  2. Fill your bag. Add a few Halloween treats or surprises.

  3. Add your signs + instructions. Include a “You’ve Been Boo’d” note, sign, or tag with instructions + a “We’ve Been Boo’d” sign for them to display on their door or window.

  4. Now for the fun part! Leave your surprise on their doorstep, ring the doorbell + make your getaway before you’re spotted!

Then it’s their turn! They can follow the instructions + use our free printable to Boo someone else and keep the Halloween fun going.

Why We Love This Halloween Tradition

Part of the fun is the treats and the excitement of making a secret delivery without being spotted. But what we really love about Boo’ing is that it’s such a simple way to do something unexpectedly nice for someone else.

It doesn’t have to be expensive or elaborate to make somebody’s day. It’s a little reminder that celebrations can also be about spreading joy, including others, and creating fun memories together!

And when one Boo turns into another and another? Even better.
